The SPORT

More sheets were printed and then perforated at the Bath Postal Museum. The first sheets perforated were of the rat-nibbled Bath perforation variety where the perforating was very rough, and some were perforated after the pins were waxed, producing the regular Bath perforated stamps.

During the development of the stamp design Colin and Alan had played with the idea of a sport (the Tower of Art stamp providing a precedent), with the Patrician`s head rotated upside down. Whether they played with other ideas is unknown, but knowing what they did on other issues and the possibilities offered here it is highly likely. Somehow though, the rotated head stamp was not corrected. One stamp was included on each sheet. With stamps positioned as they needed to be on the sheet, a rotated head just does not stand out. Did you notice it on the mini-sheet? Look again.

It was only later, after Press Day, that Colin noticed the error; not from the sheets, but because he still had that extra image file with the source files on his computer, and he then checked the sheet. He contacted the shop, concerned that the errors already printed may have already gone out in LBEs. Thus was born the Holy Grail of Discworld Stamps.

This gave the Discworld Emporium the opportunity to allow this supposed sport to be an extra special find in the occasional LBE, and limit it to 10 copies, leaving a few less of the regular stamps to be found. Some of these would be perforated on a later date at Wincanton, because as we know, going back and forth to Bath when more stamps were required was hugely impractical, so an in-house perforator was bought. This provided much better perforations, at a cost of them being slightly more widely spaced. Blue Triangle Sports are known to exist with both Bath and Wincanton perforations, but how many of each is unknown - at least to me.

And are 4 of then in a lead box under the floorboards of the Emporium? We may never know.

Readers of Snuff may have picked up on a reference to a triangular stamp with the Patrician`s head reversed. Well, be assured that this is not another previously unrecognised sport, It is a slip of the tongue - that should have been picked up by an informed proof reader.
